The Quarry
I don’t have a clear history of when this quarry was made, but I was told a story about it.
Several years ago, sometime around the Great Depression, dynamite was much easier to acquire for “the common folk”. The man who made this quarry needed extra money, had some old equipment and started scraping back the dirt to reveal the limestone below (The exposed stone can still be seen today as there are many large rocks protruding from the soil removal. You can get an idea from the pictures taken during clean up). Next, he drilled holes to place the dynamite into and break a slab free from the ledge (I was clearing the property and found a twisted, broken drill shaft still stuck in the hole it was drilling!). Then, I was told, he would run it through a steam powered crusher (I have found coal pieces scattered across what is now the side yard, so I do believe the story). The driveway onto the property is super strong so heavy trucks could use it year-round. There are “shot rock” pieces found everywhere, it seems, at the north side of the property (digging here sucks because it’s very hard to dig through pieces of rock lodged in dirt). Even though it may sound as if it is barren, it is far from it. You will get to see (when the area gets cleaned up) in the photos coming by the end of summer, it all comes together to make a very unique landscape!
